Treatment with MammoSite 5-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy can help you get back to your normal life sooner – just 5 days vs. 5-7 weeks.
MammoSite places the radiation source inside the lumpectomy cavity (the space left when a tumor is removed). This delivers radiation to the area where cancer is most likely to recur.4
Clinical trials for the MammoSite Radiation Therapy System have shown it to be well tolerated, with mild side effects for a short period of time.6
The therapy is given on an outpatient basis. No hospital stay is required.
5-year clinical trial data7 shows:
no local recurrences8
82% of the patients had good/excellent cosmetic results9
100% of patients in the initial clinical trial would recommend MammoSite to a friend or family member.1
100% of patients in the initial clinical trial would use MammoSite again if they had to do it over.1
MammoSite vs. External Beam Radiation
Dr. Louis Munoz, radiation oncologist, describes the difference between conventional radiation and MammoSite 5-Day treatment.
Video Transcript:
When you look at comparative treatment approaches, conventional breast or radiation takes anywhere from six to seven weeks of treatment. That can be a barrier to patients and access to care.
The MammoSite delivery system is done with five days with a BID or twice a day treatment option. So certainly the time is compressed initially affecting access and I would suggest quality of life. But even more importantly, the data is maturing that whole breast radiation may not and likely not needed for patients who present with early favorable disease. Also, it can allow the treatment to be done and the patients then can access a systemic chemotherapy in a reasonable timeframe as well.

In the favorably selected patient, do we need to radiate the whole breast? The benefit of medicine is that we learn from past experience and what we want to do is do what’s best today on the basis of what we’ve previously learned.
