New research and advanced technology gives women with early-stage breast cancer treatment choices beyond mastectomy and whole breast radiation.
The most significant advances include:
- Lumpectomy (removing the cancer instead of removing the breast) PLUS radiation therapy (to prevent the cancer from coming back)
- Sentinel node biopsy (to determine if cancer has spread)
- Chemoprevention (the use of drugs, vitamins, or other agents to try to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence)
- Partial breast radiation
